Visual Development
The initial idea for this short came from a visual I had while daydreaming — a robot who changed his mood by plugging in and taking out various, multi-colored cables from his body. Beyond that inspiration, I've always been fascinated by kinetic sculptures and wanted to create my own version of one, only with a more traditional storytelling focus at the core.
When developing the initial spark of an idea into a full short, I decided to add more variety into the mood-changing elements, and expanded from just cables to also include liquids and lightbulbs.
Some of the challenges with designing the character was making sure the arms would be able to navigate around the machine easily and cleanly. I knew early on I didn't want to have any cuts, and have the whole sequence be one continuous shot to convey a truly working machine.
To aid with the arm movements, I split the body of the machine up into rotating cylinders, so if needed, various elements could rotate into the hands as it moved to grab them.
